Checking the current (Load) on your 12VDC LED light systems

Testing amperage using a multi-meter

.6 to .7 amps

When using an electrical multi meter to measure amperage make sure the leads are in there proper banana Jack outputs. (Red lead in the AMP jack and Black lead in the COM jack) selector switch set to Amps/DC . Think of the meter leads being connected “one with the circuit” (in series)

In a series circuit, the rule states that the load will stay the same throughout the entire circuit, so when measuring with a multi meter you can check the amperage at any point along the circuit as long as you check it in series with the circuit. The easiest way to test your amp load is to remove the fuse and place your meter leads to the fuse contacts.

Our test will be measuring DC (Direct Current) and using a 12VDC supply to check the amperage draw or load on a LED light system. Remember when doing this test, have the power off until you’re ready to record your measurement. (Red (+) lead to the positive or supply side of the open contacts and place the Black (-) lead to the ground side of the open contact).

Now, you’re ready to power up or turn on your lighting system (make sure your circuit or your LED lights are lit up) record your reading on the meter.

After verifying the load on the circuit this will help determine your fuse rating needed. A maximum of a 5 amp fuse is recommended. For this circuit a 3 amp would be plenty to handle the load and protect the system.

The measurement readings taken for this test is based on a 10pc Vision Bright Tough Mount w/12VDC LED 12″ light strips.

The 12VDC LED light strip

Repairing LED Light Strips (Installing or replacing wire Leads that have come off)

  1. Check copper contacts at end of strip (if missing)
  2. Cut back one (1) contact link, usually about an inch (it does make the strip shorter, but it is still usable if desired)
  3. Remove silicone from the end of the LED strip, exposing copper contacts (be careful not to cut through or cutoff contacts)
  4. Identify the Positive (+) and Negative (-) side of the strips copper contacts
  5. Prep contacts (clean and use a small amount of flux and solder on each contact) next
  6. Prep wire leads before soldering (strip insulation about ¼” then use flux on wire ends, pre-solder wire )
  7. Solder leads onto strips (Red on Positive and Black on Negative) Remember LED light strips are polarity sensitive and have to be correct to illuminate or light up.
  8. Test the strip to make sure it lights up (9 volt battery works perfect for this test)
  9. Slip heat shrink tubing over the contacts and leads (2ply self-adhesive heat shrink tubing preferred)
  10. Use heat gun to shrink and seal ends (make sure the heat shrink tubing is long enough to properly seal the strip and leads)

The strip is ready for use
Hint: Always use Flux when soldering
