Checking the current load on your LED light system- Pics in order
When using an electrical multi meter to measure amperage make sure the leads are in there proper banana Jack outputs. (Red lead in the AMP jack and Black lead in the COM jack) selector switch set to A~ or A — depending on type of current you are working with. Unless you are using an amp clamp, think of the meter leads being connected “one with the circuit” (in series)
In a series circuit, the rule states that the load will stay the same throughout the entire circuit, so when measuring with a multi meter you can check the amperage at any point along the circuit as long as you check it in series with the circuit. The easiest way to test your amp load is to remove the fuse and place your meter leads on the fuse contacts.
Our test will be measuring DC (Direct Current) and using a 12VDC supply to check the amperage draw or load on a LED light system. Remember when doing this test, have the power off until you’re ready to record your measurement. (Red (+) lead to the positive or supply side of the open contacts and place the Black (-) lead to the ground side of the open contact).
Now, you’re ready to power up or turn on your lighting system (make sure your circuit or your LED lights are lit up) record your reading on the meter.
